Scaling and Root Planing / Deep Cleaning in Pasadena

Periodontal (gum) Disease is very common in the United States with over 40% of adults over 30 years of age being affected. The rates of periodontitis increase with age and is the main cause of tooth loss. Risks are increased in those with diabetes, those who smoke, those who don’t floss, and those who don’t see the dentist regularly.

Common signs of periodontal disease are inflammation and bleeding of gums, bad breath, and loose teeth. Our hygienists are trained to monitor the gums with gum pocket readings and evaluation of bone levels on routine x rays. When there is excess tartar and deeper gum pockets, a deep cleaning or scaling and root planing would be an option for treatment. During this procedure, the dental hygienist may anesthetize the mouth (typically one quadrant at a time) and spend extra time and care to remove all the bacteria present in the mouth. Other treatments that can be added to the deep cleaning are laser treatment and antibiotic placement to reduce bacterial load and help the gum to tighten and heal. Patients will notice an immediate benefit after having their deep cleaning done, with less bleeding and less tenderness of the gums.

Gum disease is often silent, just like diabetes or high blood pressure. There isn’t necessarily always pain, but we want to treat it nonetheless to minimize progression. The key is proper home care and regular cleanings to maintain the healthiest mouth possible.
